Code for Sustainable Homes Surveys

House

Many species and habitats in the UK are declining in range and size at an alarming rate, and a major factor in this decline is development. Thankfully wildlife and the environment are now being given appropriate consideration when it comes to new builds.

The Code for Sustainable Homes was launched in December 2006 and is a system of assessing the environmental performance of each new build. In terms of ecology, this system aims to promote development where it is least likely to impact on wildlife and strives to enhance the sites ecological value after development.

Category 9 deals with the site’s ecological issues and is divided into 5 sections, with a total of 9 credits being available. JCA Ltd. is able to provide ecology surveys and reports sufficient to fulfil the Code for Sustainable Homes criteria ECO 1 – 4. Our reports will assess the sites current ecological value and provide advice on how best to protect any ecological features on site from development. As well as this, recommendations will be given on how to enhance your site for wildlife. We work closely with our clients to ensure the maximum number of credits are awarded at each site.

ECO1: Ecological Value of the Site

Aim: To promote development on land that already has a limited value to wildlife and discourage the development of ecologically valuable sites.

ECO2: Ecological Enhancement

Aim: To enhance the ecological value of the site.

ECO3: Protection of Ecological Features

Aim: To promote the protection of existing ecological features from substantial damage during the clearing of the site and the completion of construction works.

ECO4: Change in Ecological Value of Site

Aim: To minimize reductions and promote an improvement in ecological value.

Code for Sustainable Homes Timetable

This survey relies on documenting the habitats and floral species present. Therefore, the optimum time for surveying is in the summer when most floral species are present.
